#100DaysOfHopper Day 9-14 (sort of) Facebook Is Editing Me

Day 9: Politics aside

5 Taliban for 1 US soldier!
This man was a deserter.
His father spoke Arabic at the WH!
His father looks like a terrorist!
This is the USA, Obama!
We don't negotiate with terrorists!

Now imagine it was your son, your daughter, your brother or sister, your father or mother, your friend and you just got them back.

Still outraged?

Day 10 is also missing....hmmm?

Day 11: Prom Season. Ahh, that time of year when men in their 40's beam with pride at the beautiful daughters and handsome sons. Then along comes me to remind them of just how sketchy dad was at 18. How they put more planning into getting into so and so's pants than into four years of high school. How they took pride in the manipulation, the deceit and other less than chivalrous qualities. That smile changes.

Now, I'm not saying it's not a wonderful time and that at 18 I was any different, but I never saw the need to attend such silly affairs. I also wasn't that desperate to feel the need to spend all kinds of money with the hope that my date would get drunk and become a porn star. Sorry, but that's pretty much what guys think. I just had too much respect for anyone I wanted to be with to enter into that charade.

Which leads me to the point of this. If you have s daughter you teach her to be smart, to be safe and to use good judgment, but what about your sons? There's the dad that hands his kid a condom, some extra cash and a pat on the back, but what does that teach? How many fathers sit their sons down and lecture them on respect, courtesy and women's rights? How many men tell their boys that being passed out doesn't equal consent? How many boys understand the definition of NO doesn't mean in a little while or until I get tired of your nagging? I didn't go to the prom, but mine father told me these, as did my mother.

We have developed a culture in this country that degrades women and disrespects them. For years, men hsvevfelt that their libidos were more important than a woman's choices. That it was their right to have their way on prom night, in some kind of medieval ownership of manhood. A real man doesn't expect anything and respects a woman. Your 18 year old is still a boy, if he hasn't learned these lessons yet. Sadly, it might not be his fault, as he may a father who is nothing more than a boy himself. #100DaysOfHopper

A few more vanished into Facebook Air

Day 14 (didn't have time yesterday): It's summertime and everyone is making their last ditch effort to get skinny enough to look good in a bikini or other kind of bathing suit. Diets, exercise, etc is in motion. So you stress your body physically, mentally & nutritionally for a "greater" good.

Did you know that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and one in five people will get some form of it in their lifetime? Did you know Caucasians have a higher rate than others? Did you know that one bad burn increases your chance of melanoma? Did you know 1 person dies every hour in the United States from skin cancer? Did you know that nearly .05-1% of the US will get skin cancer and of these people.

So maybe eating that bun, skipping that gym day or whatever else it may be, just so you can soak up some rays and look good doing it, isn't going to kill you. Maybe it'll save you. #100DaysOfHopper

White Privilege

This was a post I wrote on Facebook after surprisingly not seeing any moaning about the Documentary by Jose Antonio Vargas, titled White People Dayyum! I just scrolled my timeline and not a single white person got their feelings hurt by White People. I unfortunately haven't seen it, but the number of fake accounts that popped up on twitter, tells me it was a damn good show. Here's the thing. If someone of color aka non-white says "White Privilege," are you offended? If you said yes, then you are exhibiting white privilege. It has nothing to do with how hard you work or study, how you stayed out of trouble, because here's the thing, that is entirely the point. Somewhere out there, there are 100 Black, Spanish, Native American, Arab, Asian, who worked and studied as hard as you and never got in trouble, but they don't have what you "earned" or achieved. Stop looking at the one person you know who isn't white that achieved as your benchmark. Loo

11 Rules of Life - Bill Gates?

I read this on Facebook this morning.  A friend had posted it and said that every child should have to receive this. I of course read it and started to think.  I immediately wondered who really wrote this, as I rarely see things like this attributed to the proper person.  I immediately found it was written by Conservative Charles J. Sykes when he wrote a book about how America is dumbing down our youth.  I read it twice and started to wonder how true it was.  Below is a link to the actual picture I saw. So let's look at each of the rules and analyze them. Rule 1: Life is not fair — get used to it! - Life is not fair in that we are not all afforded the same opportunities based on race, creed, color, socio-economic background, but in general, those who are afforded the same opportunities to succeed are very often rewarded for their individual efforts.  Sure there may be underlying circumstances, but hard work is proven to pay more often than not and those who strive for succ

Quickie Review - Finding Vivian Maier

While I thoroughly enjoyed the film, especially the first 15-20 minutes, I was a little bothered by the way the film played out. The interviews with the clearly disturbed brother, sister and the mother, who obviously, was in for a cut, didn't need to be in the film. Then the woman who suggested abuse, yet seemed to have her life defined by Maier, as she tried to muster every ounce of emotion and fake guilt. Her friend, more than happy to be party of the charade. People who talk about abuse for the first time, usually don't do so on camera. The fact these scenes were so prominent, shows that they felt wronged that they were not rewarded. Maloof on the other hand, seems to disappear from the documentary during this part, almost hiding away from the fact, he went from complete praise, to even making money off of her, to destroying her personal legacy. He almost mentions the family of boys taking care of her rent, as an afterthought. Her burial spot, never shown, yet a video of her
